St Peter’s Centre Creates Fabulous Arts Alive Venue

St Peter’s Centre creates fabulous Arts Alive venue

Communion’s work has been showcased as part of a promotional video for ‘Arts Alive’. This amazing organisation uses the arts to bring communities together across Herefordshire and Shropshire.

Two of Communion’s projects are featured as part of the film. It is amazing to see formerly cold, underused buildings transformed into vibrant community spaces, which bring people together.

Sian Kerry from Art’s Alive loves the venue.

“the conversion is absolutely stunning and the church makes a fabulous venue for live performance. Peterchurch is far and away the most inspiring community space I have worked in over the two counties, I love the quality of design and materials – and with such a dynamic vicar there to make it come alive it’s a great combination.”

Communion was formed to provide a place where space, design and people meet. This film shows the very real difference our work makes to the lives of individuals and whole communities across the country. Communion Wins Bid to Work with Sir Christopher Wren.

Communion was delighted to win a bid to design a master plan for The Sir John Moore Foundation, working in partnership with Broadway Malyan Architects. The submission proposes a new learning landscape for the Foundation’s site in Stafford. The Foundation is unique, combining a Primary School, Visitor Centre and Community Venue, all housed in a 17th Century, Grade 1 listed school building, originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The master plan looks to the future by proposing a new building in the grounds of the school, providing additional classrooms, a sports hall and further community spaces. The new and existing buildings will be set in a landscape for learning and will undergo a series of conservation and restoration projects as part of the £4,000,000 scheme. We will keep you posted on progress. Click here to find out more about the Foundation.

Royal Visit for Communion.

The Duke of Gloucester visited St Peter’s, Peterchurch. This was the first time one of our projects has received a Royal Visit and the Duke clearly appreciated the architecture, which has transformed the church into a thriving community space. The important role St Peter’s plays within the local community was demonstrated on the day with all the community groups who use the building present in the nave, creating a packed venue. The Duke’s visit confirmed once again the national significance of this project and it was an encouraging endorsement for all those involved in transforming the church and running it day-to-day. St Peter’s Centre wins at The Wood Awards 2010

Communion Design is delighted to let you know that the Communion-designed St Peter’s Centre was a winner at The Wood Awards 2010. The announcement was made at last week’s award ceremony in Central London.

The centre was short-listed earlier in the year, and competed for the prestigious prize against projects from all over the UK.

The Wood Awards 2010 Judges noted on the project ‘This has clearly been a labour of love and care. The design and craftsmanship is excellent throughout making the overall result appear effortless.’

The Wood Awards celebrate the use of wood in building and design. St Peter’s Centre was short-listed in recognition of the use of the material, particularly oak, throughout the building, from floors to freestanding timber insertions.

We are always keen to tell people about the exceptional projects we have been privileged to work on at Communion. To see St Peter’s Centre recognised in this way, scooping a national award for both the quality of the design and the workmanship, is deeply gratifying.

St Peter’s Centre pioneer Take a Pew Project

St Peter’s is the first church to take part in the Take a Pew project. Run by EnviroAbility, Take a Pew provides employment for adults with learning disabilities, as they re-size and sell the pews. The Take-A-Pew scheme was established as a Partnership between The Diocese of Herefordshire Churches, Herefordshire Council Social Services, and EnviroAbility which manages and facilitates the scheme.

The workforce includes adults from disadvantaged groups and people with disabilities who are trained and competent in the skills required to process pews.

The basis of the Partnership is that of mutual benefit for the three parties based on:

Work experience and paid work activities for people with learning difficulties and skilled support for these service users,

The donor Church receiving a fair financial return for their pews, and benefiting from the work carried out on their behalf by the other partners,

The Take-A-Pew scheme itself receiving a fair financial return for their involvement: all EnviroAbility revenues from the scheme are used for this and other projects allowing us to help more disadvantaged groups.

Income and expenditure are accounted for on a church-by-church basis, with the proceeds of sale shared equally between the donor church and Take-A-Pew, after costs have been met.

In this way, everyone is a winner, churches receive a good income, disadvantaged groups and people with a learning disability are given worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable work and activity in refurbishing the pews and EnviroAbility is able to maintain the scheme and pursue it's charitable objectives.
